I recently had the chance to get on the field at a Seattle Sounders FC match. This was my first time photographing a professional sporting event besides golf and I'll just start off by saying it was hard! Soccer is so much more difficult to predict than golf which is very static. I had debated renting a larger lens but decided to go out with my new Canon 70-200mm f2.8L IS II. Overall I was super happy with the images I got and most of the night I was shooting wide open at 2.8. I bumped my ISO to 1600 and was able to shoot at a 1/800 shutter speed. This allowed me to freeze the action very well. I learned a lot throughout the night and my images seemed to get better as the night went on as I was able to anticipate certain parts of the action. I have a lot more respect for those photographers that are at these games day in and day out as it was not easy. I had a great time and hope to do it again!
